Overview

The upcoming Trans-Tasman Educators Conference: Union Education Transforming Our Worlds brings together educators and lead organisers from Australia and New Zealand to challenge, share ideas, and develop education strategy and practice. This ensures that union education in all its forms is fit to play its role in deepening understanding of the challenges faced by working people and to develop capacity at all levels in the movement to meet these challenges.

Plenaries

The conference includes plenary sessions designed to challenge our thinking and practice:

Dave Spooner, Director of Global Union Institute and a contributor to the book Trade Union Education: Transforming Our World, will provide an international perspective on importance of deep education in the work we do;

Dr Lynette Riley, a Wiradjuri and Gamilaroi person, working at the University of Sydney will lead an interactive session about Aboriginal Kinship systems and how they govern relationships and the impact of colonisation. This provides an important opportunity for educators to expand understanding but also to reflect on active learning methods that trigger critical thinking and deepen understanding in relation to teaching Aboriginal participants and working with Aboriginal communities;

Dr David Peetz, will explore the depth and breadth of delegate and activist education in the Australian Union Movement based on data being collected from unions in 2019 and explore some of the challenges we face in this work. He will be joined by presenters from our movement sharing examples of education in the face of real challenge.

Creativity in Education is a plenary that challenges our practice as educators – engaging us in learning processes that draw on the creativity to learn at another level.

Workshops

Workshops provide an important opportunity for educators throughout our movements to share their practice and encourages peer to peer learning and networking. The themes for workshops this year are:

  • Deep Education: that challenges the status quo and calls for people to act.
  • Innovation: who, where and how are we educating in a way that meets the needs of today’s member leaders.
  • Practice of Education: reflecting on our skills and practice as educators to challenge ourselves and expand on the methods and skills we use.

The design workshops see educators collaborating to develop a session that will be made available to all attending the conference. This provides educators with an opportunity to apply skills and knowledge gained from the conference and develop a practical resource.
