Activism and commitment are the lifeblood of unions. Educating delegates and developing activists is the key to strong and effective unions in the workplace. It is the basis for union growth. (unions@work 1999)

  • We know that Delegates are central to unions’ capacity to organise and achieve outcomes for working people in workplaces, industry and the community.
  • We know that education is key to providing the confidence for people to act.
  • We know that unions are most effective when delegate development is connected to their work.
  • We know that to successfully transfer learning there needs to be follow-up in the workplace.

This holistic program will bring together experienced Delegates from different unions to develop their capacity to be leaders in their workplaces and across the union movement.

The program includes:

  • One four-day workshop addressing organising, communication, negotiation and campaign skills, current economic and industrial debates and their implications for workers.
  • Workplace organising project.
  • Supported online learning.

The program also includes mentoring and coaching for Organisers whose delegates are participating in the program, to develop the confidence and ability to effectively follow up delegates.  There will be an Organiser Briefing prior to the course commencing.

Aims
To develop the leadership of union delegates to address the challenges they face in their workplaces and industries

Objectives
At the end of this program delegates will be able to:

  • Connect and learn with union delegates from a range of unions;
  • Demonstrate values-based leadership in their workplaces and industries;
  • Critically analyse the role of the economy and different players in work related issues;
  • Research and analyse the issues working people experience in their workplaces;
  • Develop effective strategies to enable workers to come together to resolve issues in their workplace and industries;
  • Develop realistic and achievable plans to address issues;
  • Confidently communicate with working people about the role of unions in improving their lives and to engage them in this;
  • Confidently negotiate on issues at a workplace level.

Note
We are asking affiliates to:

  • Enrol at least two delegates (working in a priority site in which there is or will be an organising campaign), and ensure their release from work;
  • Ensure that their organisers attend the organiser briefing (which should be scheduled during the week prior to the course commencing) and that they can support the delegates to successfully complete the organising projects.
